The Power of Supporting Local Businesses: Building Stronger Communities

In recent years, there has been a growing movement emphasizing the importance of supporting local businesses. From neighborhood shops and family-run restaurants to independent artisans and service providers, these local enterprises contribute significantly to the vibrancy and economic health of our communities. In this article, we will explore the many reasons why supporting local businesses is crucial and how it positively impacts both the local economy and our overall quality of life.

We, at the Trafalgar really see the benefit of supporting local businesses, and work with many local businesses to promote their work as part of our venue hiring.

Below are some reasons why supporting local business is so important.

  1. Boosting the Local Economy

When you choose to support local businesses, you are directly investing in your community. A study conducted by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance found that local businesses tend to circulate a greater percentage of their revenue back into the local economy compared to larger chain stores. This creates a multiplier effect, stimulating economic growth, generating employment opportunities, and increasing tax revenue that can be utilized for local development projects, infrastructure improvements, and public services.

  1. Fostering Unique and Diverse Communities

Local businesses are the heart and soul of our communities. They contribute to the distinct character and charm of a neighborhood, offering a wide range of unique products, services, and experiences that cannot be replicated by larger chains. Whether it’s the cozy bookstore that hosts author events, the artisanal bakery with its mouthwatering creations, or the local art gallery showcasing talented artists, these businesses add depth, diversity, and creativity to our surroundings. By supporting them, we help preserve the local culture and maintain a vibrant community identity.

  1. Personalized Customer Service and Expertise

One of the greatest advantages of supporting local businesses is the exceptional customer service and personalized attention they provide. Local business owners often have a deep knowledge of their products or services and take pride in going the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction. They can offer personalized recommendations, tailor their offerings to meet individual needs, and build lasting relationships with their patrons. The sense of community and connection that comes from these interactions is priceless.

  1. Environmental Sustainability

Choosing to support local businesses can also have positive environmental impacts. Local businesses often have smaller carbon footprints compared to large corporations, as they tend to source their products locally, use less transportation, and prioritize sustainable practices. Additionally, they often have a vested interest in preserving the natural beauty of their community and may actively support local environmental initiatives, further promoting sustainability and a healthier environment for everyone.

  1. Strengthening Social Fabric

Local businesses serve as gathering places and social hubs, fostering a sense of belonging and community engagement. They provide spaces for people to meet, connect, and build relationships, which is especially important in an era where digital interactions dominate. By frequenting local establishments, we create opportunities for social interaction, support community events, and contribute to the overall well-being and happiness of our fellow community members.

Supporting local businesses is not merely a financial transaction; it’s an investment in the well-being and vitality of our communities. By choosing to shop local, dine local, and utilize local services, we contribute to the local economy, promote diversity, nurture personal connections, and create a stronger and more sustainable community for everyone. So, let’s celebrate and support our local businesses, as they are the backbone of our neighborhoods, the driving force behind economic growth, and the key to building a better future.

Phil Collins

It is with great sadness, that the Trafalgar Trust reports the death in December 2020 of one of its longest serving Trustees, Phil Collins.  Phil was a very active Director and member of the management committee which runs the Trafalgar Rowing Centre in Greenwich.   His commitment to the sport of rowing and work to run the facilities provided generations of rowers the opportunity to row on the river Thames.

Phil was a life time member of Globe Rowing Club, joining in the late sixties. He was a first class rower and an excellent coach, who was responsible for coaching the first Globe crew to enter Henley Royal regatta.   Many club members – from beginners to performance level – benefitted from Phil’s coaching on the river and in the club gym. Phil was a qualified umpire, often seen on the river at Putney for the great ‘Head of the River’ races and at regattas up and down the country.

Our condolences to his family, he is much missed by the rowing community.

Committee Statement on COVID-19

COVID-19 UPDATE

In light of the latest government advice recommending that everyone avoids large social gatherings, and in order to protect the health of our members, guests and volunteers, we have decided to temporarily close the Trafalgar Rowing Centre as from 23th March 2020 in order to play our part in ensuring the country moves beyond this as swiftly as possible.

We will be in touch with anyone who currently holds a reservation for hire of the hall. If you have paid a deposit we will either credit you against a future booking, or refund any money paid – this will be your choice, and our Treasurer will be in touch to make arrangements. AT THIS POINT WE WILL NOT BE TAKING BOOKINGS FOR EVENTS TO BE HELD WITHIN A PERIOD OF SIX MONTHS, ie UNTIL 1ST OCTOBER 2020. We will review this position in three months time.

For over 100 years the Trafalgar Rowing Centre, and its constituent clubs have provided a source of healthy outdoor exercise for the people of Greenwich. We are proud of what we have become over the last twenty years since re-launching as the Trafalgar 2001 Trust: a hub for social, eduicational and community activity, not merely a sports club. We will be back.

Tideway juvenile fish survey summary report

The larval and juvenile fish surveys in the Tidal Thames are now complete. The Estuaries and Wetlands team at ZSL, together with partners Bournemouth University and SC2 have analysed the data and put together a report. Please find attached a summary of this report should you wish to see what discoveries your efforts contributed to!

ZSL would like to express its gratitude to the many volunteers who donated their time and effort to the Tideway juvenile and larval fish surveys. With such an extensive methodology we really could not have done it without you. We hope that your experience has increased your admiration for the Thames and that you continue to spread the word about the wildlife and wonders found here.
The Trafalgar Committee continues to support this great cause, and is pleased to see the diversity of the river increase year after year.
